Boris Johnson has apologised for his attendance at a Downing Street garden party during the first lockdown.

The prime minister’s insistence that he thought it was a “work event” was met with scepticism by numerous in the country – especially by those who were fined for lockdown infringements.

At least 118,000 punishments have been issued for breaches of coronavirus rules, some of those to parties caught having a social drink in their garden.
